If I Were But A Big Baboon

By Josie Whitehead

If I were but a big baboon

And lived within a zoo,

I’d want to live out in the world –

Well, surely, so would you!

If I were but a big baboon,

I’d flash my big red bum

And then sit on an old tree stump

And make a face that’s glum.

If I were but a big baboon,

I’d groom the other apes

And then I’d picnic with my friends

And make off with their grapes.

If I were but a big baboon,

I’d leap around my cage

And. when I’m angry, just look out.

I’ll show my teeth in rage.

If I were but a big baboon,

I’d be part of a troop,

For, living in the great outdoors,

There’s safety in a group.

If I were but a big baboon –

My poems you’d never get

So I’ll stay human – yes I will –

And write more poems? You bet!!!
