Loss Of Control

By Creta Harper

The turmoil in my mind grows stronger,
Thoughts flow faster.
Am I being followed?
Am I safe?

My chest constricts as my mind
Repeats a question over
And over
And over
And over
And over
And I can’t breathe,
Can’t move,
Can’t think beyond that stupid question!
My breathing speeds up,
My hands tighten into fists,
The tears start flowing.

I can’t breathe,
I’m crying,
Embarrassed that someone
is seeing me this way.
I’m sorry.
I’m sorry.
I can’t control my mind.
I can’t control my anxiety.
