Ode

By Zandile Carol

Uzigqibil’izindaba,mama you stood
When fires burned,and thunders roared
When hailstorm came, bent you in two
When shackles came, and caged and your love
And froze your hearth, made dim your light
Mama you stood, when all was so
You’ve sewn black hearts, made broken new
Made crooked paths,their bends upstraight
You’ve shone your light,down dark’ned ends
Made ghettos heaven, carved kings and queens
Made terrors flee,at just your sight
Made winters lose,their mighty sting
Wore courage with grace, marched even when you bled
Uzigqibil’izindaba,mama phumula
Who can count your deeds,by numbers name?
All forgotten souls, that you gave a home
All forsake dreams, which you filled with hope
All the hate you quelled, with love and grace
Who of these can tell,or in numbers name?
All the great you weaved, when your sun was high
Uzigqibil’izindaba,our sun is set
Uzigqibil’izindaba,our star is fled
Uzigqibil’izindaba,our tree has fell
Uzigqibil’izindaba,the beautiful ones’ are gone
Uzigqibil’izindaba,mama,phumula.
