Road Trip To Nowhere And Everywhere

By Geoffrey Fafard

So who is for a trip to nowhere
Out onto the Territory plains
Across the top through Gregory
To that Kimberly country that is calling.

Who wants to sit around that fire
and listen to the Dingoes howl
We’ll watch the giant brolgas dance
And throw some laughter after
That big smiling croc’s tail.

I’ve made up my mind to do a wander
Next year before I get much older
Maybe ten or fifteen thousand k’s
One last big walkabout across this land
Across the top all the way
on those dusty roads that love me so.

It will take a year to fix my truck
And get the old girl in order
With Solar and a new roof she’ll be fine
I don’t need compass or GPS
I’ll just head N.W.by West
You cant get lost following the sun.

I have such a burning desire
To see it all just once again
I am restless in my dreaming
To sit beneath the stars
And the big glowing moon
On some distant lost billabong.

With the Roos and Wallabies
Pelicans and Burdekin ducksand
The honking Magpie geese
A slinky smooth old Python
And all the rest of the river kin.

Out in that country much bigger
Than all my memories gathered together
A few little warning signs have
Made me aware that time
Is now important …the time is nigh.

So back to my question would you like to come
Into that country and follow the sun
Meet me there for a coldie
And a barramundi steak
For you see this outback journey
Will be the last I will make.
