Christmas Time In Tennessee Poem
By Donna McCord
The leaves have all fallen, there’s a chill in the air
There’s smoke in the chimneys you see everywhere.
Soon the snow will start falling, a hush in the night
And the chilled wind adds sparkle to things at twilight.
The hustle and bustle as December arrives
Just like a postcard from Currier and Ives
There’s a smile on young faces in anticipation
Of the start of the holiday and school’s cessation.
Houses aglow with the holiday cheer
Some look the same as they did last year
Others alight with last year’s clearance haul
And the caroler’s voices suggest, “Deck the Halls”
The tree in the window proudly displays
The bountiful treasures of all ‘yesterdays’.
The gifts are all wrapped in bright paper and bows
The hearth displays stockings where each child’s name shows.
The old folks huddle by the fireplace at home
Where their children flock with their young‘uns in tow.
The aroma of sweet breads and pudding and cakes
Means more hands are needed to help decorate.
This state is known to be friendlier than most
And you’ll never find a more obliging host.
It’s a wonderful life here as you can see
There’s no place like Christmas in Tennessee.
