Eternity

By Joanne Maria McNally

In pain
Before death
We had only minutes;
You didn’t know
Death’s pull
Was so close –

Or did you?

You heard me speak
I think you heard –
Our oneness felt
So complete

I heard no sounds –
Your eyes expressed
What I couldn’t grasp
Only sense

I spoke intensely
Reassuringly
Stroking you
Affirming
My love

I spoke the same words
Again and again
Like a chant
Praying they’d reach you
As you slipped
To where
You were heading
Away from my side

Holding on to your eyes
With mine
You became distant
They became darker –
Filled
With a never-ending
Depth

I was looking into Eternity
