The March On Washington

By Gina Ryder

Under the hot beating sun that August

I walk till my legs ache humming a tune

so sweet, strong, and spirited with boldness

near Washington monument that afternoon

for employment,freedom, and civil rights

I protested, shouted, sang, scream, and cried

don’t give up the fight but stand up for your rights

for we shouldn’t hide or be judge but take pride

to hear Martin Luther King say his speech

made my soul a flutter beyond the breeze

the truth he taught and preach grew to outreach

that almost everyone fell on their knees

he had a quite marvelous dream you see

everyone was equal and it might be
