The Parable Of The Butterfly And The Cockroach

By Katrina Armour

Would it make you sad to see
A butterfly in a jar
With no breathing holes
Or flying space?
What if I stabbed a pin into its abdomen?
Would you call me cruel?

Now consider a moment the cockroach
A disgusting, gold-backed thing.
Would it make you sad to see
A cockroach in a jar
With no breathing holes
Or living space?
Would you even be able to look at it without vomiting,
As it writhed upon its back?

‘Tis the time-old tale of beauty and the beast
The measure of humanity
To tell who’s worth the least
