Walking Blues

By Monique Simón

The breeze moves

Deftly

Lifting the heavy curtain

The sun sneaks in

Bright

I avert my eyes

Take cover

Under

The weighted blanket

The daily fog begins

With this new version of early morning CrossFit

Where I roll to one side

To ease the pain

Then the other, and over, and…

Do it again

But, I take breaks

To recover

From the breathy aerobics

To listen to spiders weave

Stories around flies

While the flies brag about their trips

Around the web

Their sunny tales remind me

Of yesterday’s fortune cookie

“It’s another new day”

In bed

The sunlight persists

Through my windowed pain

Until my eyes follow

Its spotlight

To a picture–in high contrast–

Of cobwebs

On my walking shoes
