Electrochemistry

By Chang

Who took the electron?
I, said the cathode.
As my reduction potential outrode,
I took the electron.

Who gave it away?
I, said the anode.
When my reductant mournfully erode,
I gave it away.

Who brought the message?
I, said the electrode.
Where my electrons and cavities strode,
I brought the message.

Who’ll balance the charge?
I, said the salt bridge.
If my ions do not perish,
I’ll balance the charge.

Who’ll carry the ions?
I, said the water.
If the reactants do not alter,
I’ll carry the ions.

Who’ll measure the potential?
I, said the potentiometer.
For I can remove all current that linger,
I’ll measure the potential.

Farewell, electron!
Said the reductant.
I’ll be wandering with positive charge,
Waiting for the next migrant.

Welcome, electron!
Said the oxidant.
You’ll like the higher reduction potential,
with laws of electrochemistry to warrant.

But be cautious!
Look out for the electric source
who turns galvanic to electrolytic,
and reverses lines of the lyric.
