Herbal Tea

By Yehuda Amichai

She poured him herbal tea to soothe
him. She said: “your desires
and wild lusts domesticated in many, many years,
you know, like wolves and dogs.
Tonight you’ll be like thousands of years ago.”

She led him by his hoarse penis
into a white, white bedroom
to please God and human beings.

“You’ll wonder what can be wings,
you’ll wonder; even heavy thighs and memories.”

She took off her long white gown,
the external soul of her body;
the internal soul she left on.
