Life Cycle

By Lauren McBride

In my garden
the chrysalis —
translucent, orange.
And me watching,
waiting for the moment
the monarch will emerge.
Then — in a blink,
a newborn adult
testing its wings.

In my arms
the children —
transforming, maturing,
emerging as adults.
Then — in a blink,
entire lifetimes flash
the moment
each takes flight —
independent too soon.
