Raven

By Fred Appelhanz

Raven proclaims words
of wisdom and warning,
to those who listen,
to those who understand.

Soaring above treetops,
taunting crows and jays.
Sometimes perched quietly,
casting inquisitive glances.

Raven broadcasts riddles,
within our mountains and vales.
Wherever mortals celebrate
heartfelt, simple reverence.

Moonlight tenderly caresses,
Raven’s midnight silhouette.
For in the hush of nighttime stillness,
fables dance with fairylike spirits.

As our lives deviate and lurch,
occasionally recall an echoing refrain,
and smile.
