My Father's Head
By Musa Gift Masombuka
I want to draw my father’s head
Paint it nicely with my image I believe sons look like their fathers just as daughters look like their mothers
I want to draw my father’s head
Paint it nicely with my image And pluck it onto all these men who come disguised as him
I want to draw my father’s heart
As kind as mine
Insert it into these men So that they be kinder to mom and love her like I do just as I believed my father did.
I want to draw my father’s presence using shadows of these men who come and go out of my life disguised as my father
then I would draw my father’s presence into our home
For it shall no longer be like a museum
Where men come and leave their portraits
and these portraits no one wants to buy
Others come to glance at our scars Too deep for them to handle then they end up leaving.
